How Many Words in a 5 Minute Speech?
This is the most common question speakers ask. The answer depends on your speaking speed, but here are reliable ranges based on the standard pace for each context:
1 Minute
125-150 words. An elevator pitch or a quick introduction. Just enough to make one clear point.
3 Minutes
375-450 words. A short toast, class presentation, or lightning talk. Covers one main idea with supporting points.
5 Minutes
625-750 words. A full class talk, a pitch or a longer toast. Long enough for a story, an argument, or a key takeaway with examples.
10 Minutes
1,250-1,500 words. A TED-style talk or chapter presentation. Room for 2-3 main points with depth and transitions.
15 Minutes
1,875-2,250 words. A conference breakout session. Cover a topic thoroughly with examples and audience interaction.
20 Minutes
2,500-3,000 words. A keynote segment or lecture section. Detailed enough for complex topics with slides and demos.

Words to Minutes Quick Reference
Slow is 110 words per minute, normal 130, fast 160, and silent reading 238. So 45:27 means 45 minutes 27 seconds.
| Words | Slow | Normal | Fast | Reading silently |
|---|
500 words
Speaking: 3-4 minutes. Reading: about 2 minutes. The length of a short blog post or a best man toast.
1,000 words
Speaking: 6.5-8 minutes. Reading: about 4 minutes. A short talk or a detailed product pitch.
2,000 words
Speaking: 13-16 minutes. Reading: about 8 minutes. A university lecture section or a podcast episode monologue.
5,000 words
Speaking: 33-40 minutes. Reading: about 21 minutes. A full seminar, audiobook chapter, or long-form podcast episode.
Reading Time vs Speaking Time
Many people confuse reading time with speaking time. They are very different because speaking out loud is significantly slower than reading silently.
Silent Reading
- Average speed: 238 words per minute
- No pauses for breathing or emphasis
- Eyes can skip ahead and backtrack
- Faster for familiar material
- Used for: articles, books, documents
Speaking Aloud
- Average speed: 125-150 words per minute
- Includes breathing pauses and emphasis
- Must pace for listener comprehension
- Slower for technical or emotional content
- Used for: speeches, presentations, podcasts
Time it spoken, not read. A 4 minute silent read takes about 6 to 8 minutes aloud, so plan at speaking pace, 125 to 150 words per minute. For YouTube scripts with section timing, try the YouTube Script Timer.
How to Calculate Speech Length
The formula is simple, but getting the right pace matters more than the math:
-
Count your words
Paste your text into the calculator above, or check the word count in your document editor. Most word processors show this in the bottom status bar.
-
Choose your speaking speed
Pick an occasion, such as Presentation, Podcast or Lecture, or type your own pace. If you are unsure, 130 words per minute suits most speeches.
-
Add buffer time
Plan for 10-15% extra time beyond the calculated duration to account for pauses, audience reactions, slide transitions, and ad-lib moments that naturally extend any live delivery.
-
Practice and adjust
Read your speech aloud once with a timer. Your real pace may differ from the average, so move the pace slider to match it.
Sources checked in October 2026. Brysbaert, 2019 gives silent reading at 238 words per minute. The National Center for Voice and Speech puts speech at about 150. ACX plans audiobooks at about 9,300 words an hour.
