Frame by Frame on YouTube Itself
On a computer, youtube.com has its own keys for this. Pause the video, then press comma to go back one frame and period to go forward.
They only work while the video is paused. The YouTube app on a phone has no button that steps one frame.
| Key on youtube.com | What it does |
|---|---|
| , comma | Back one frame, while paused |
| . period | Forward one frame, while paused |
| K | Play or pause |
| J | Back 10 seconds |
| L | Forward 10 seconds |
| Shift and < | Slower |
| Shift and > | Faster |
The same keys work here. Comma and period step one frame on this page too. On a phone, tap the frame buttons under the video.
Why the Frame Rate Setting Matters
A video is a run of still pictures called frames. Most videos show 24, 25, 30 or 60 frames each second.
YouTube's player does not tell other sites a video's frame rate. So you set it here, and each press then moves exactly one frame.
| Frames per second | One frame lasts | Common for |
|---|---|---|
| 24 | 41.7 milliseconds | Films and animation |
| 25 | 40 milliseconds | TV in Europe, Africa and much of Asia |
| 30 | 33.3 milliseconds | Phones, webcams and screen recordings |
| 60 | 16.7 milliseconds | Games, sports and fast motion |
Not sure which one? Step a few frames. If two presses show the same picture, pick a lower number. If the motion jumps, pick a higher one.
A 60 frames per second video plays at 30 below 720p quality. Pick 30 then, or raise the quality in the player's settings.
Use a Video From Your Device
Press Open a video from your device, or drop a video file on the page. It plays right here and is never uploaded.
- The real frame rate: read from your file, so every press moves exactly one frame
- Save this frame: keep the frame on screen as a picture, at full size
- Zoom: 2 or 4 times closer, then drag to look around
- No player on top: nothing covers the picture
Which files work? MP4 and WebM play in every modern browser. MOV usually plays too. If one will not open, try another browser.

Frequently asked questions
What coaches, teachers and animators ask most about watching YouTube frame by frame.
How do I watch a YouTube video frame by frame?
Paste the link into the box above and press Open video. Pause where you want to look closely, then press the frame buttons to move one frame back or forward.
Can I go frame by frame on my phone?
Yes. The YouTube app has no button that steps one frame. Open this page on your phone, paste the link and tap the frame buttons under the video.
What are the YouTube keyboard shortcuts for frame by frame?
On youtube.com, pause the video, then press comma to go back one frame and period to go forward one. They only work while the video is paused. This page uses the same keys.
How do I slow down a YouTube video?
Choose 0.25, 0.5 or 0.75 under Speed. At 0.25 the video plays at a quarter of its speed, which suits fast movement like a golf swing or a jump.
How do I repeat one part of a YouTube video?
Go to where the part begins and press Start here, then go to where it ends and press End here. Turn on Repeat this part and it plays again and again.
How do I share a YouTube video at an exact frame?
Pause on the frame and copy the link under Share this exact moment. It opens this page on that frame, at your speed. A normal YouTube link only goes to the whole second.
Why does a step skip a frame or show the same frame twice?
The video's frame rate differs from the one set here. Try 24, 25, 30 or 60 under Frames per second until each press moves one frame. For a video from your device, the page usually reads it for you.
Does this work with YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Paste the Shorts link and the player keeps its tall shape. Every button works the same way.
Does it work with Vimeo videos?
Yes. Paste a Vimeo link and it opens the same way. Private Vimeo videos, and ones their owner keeps off other sites, will not play. Some Vimeo videos cannot change speed.
Can I use a video from my computer or phone?
Yes. Press Open a video from your device, or drag the file onto the link box. It plays in your browser and is never uploaded. Most MP4, MOV and WebM files work.
Can I save a frame as a picture?
Yes, for a video from your device. Pause and press Save this frame for a full size picture. YouTube and Vimeo play in their own player, so this page cannot save their frames. Use a screenshot instead.
Can I zoom in on the video?
Yes, for a video from your device. Pick 2× or 4× under Zoom, then drag the picture to the part you want. YouTube and Vimeo players cannot be zoomed from another site.
Does it download the video?
No. YouTube and Vimeo videos play from their own sites inside this page. A video from your device stays on your device, so nothing is downloaded or uploaded.
Why will a video not play here?
Its owner may have turned off playing on other sites, or the video is private, deleted or age-restricted. Those play only on YouTube or Vimeo. A device file may use a format your browser cannot play.
