    What is YouTube Shorts Remixing?

Remixing lets you use part of another video in your own Short: its sound, its picture, or a few seconds of both.

You do it with the Remix button in the YouTube app. Your Short then links back to the original, so its creator gets the credit.

    The 5 YouTube Remix Types

Tap Remix under a video in the app to see the ones it allows.

    1. Sound

Use up to 90 seconds of a video's sound under your own picture. Some videos allow only 30 seconds.

Best for: trends, dances and voiceovers

    2. Green Screen

Put a video behind you as your background, with its sound or without.

      Best for: reactions and commentary

    3. Cut

Take 1 to 5 seconds of a video, picture and sound, to open your own Short.

Best for: building on one moment or punchline

    4. Collab

Record your Short side by side with the original as it plays.

      Best for: duets and follow-alongs

    5. Reimagine

YouTube's AI turns one frame of a Short into a new 8 second clip. It is still reaching accounts, in English first.

Best for: creative spins on a trend

There is also Use this template, which lets you make a Short in the same format as another one.

How Remixing Helps You Grow on YouTube

    • New viewers: a remix shows your video to the remixer's audience
    • A link back: every remix credits you, so those viewers can find your channel
    • Free reach: it costs you nothing once remixing is on
    • Connections: creators who remix each other often keep going back and forth

Tips for Getting Your Content Remixed More

    • Open with a moment to answer: a strong claim, a question or a surprise. The Hook Generator writes some.
    • Make sound worth reusing: catchy audio and lines people want to quote
    • Ask for it: end with “Remix this with your take”
    • Keep it on: check Shorts remixing is allowed in Studio

Remixing or Re-uploading: Know the Difference

Never download and re-upload someone's video. It can get you copyright strikes. The Remix button credits the original for you.

    Frequently asked questions

What creators ask most about remixing on YouTube.

How do I see who remixed my YouTube Short?

In YouTube Studio, open Analytics, then Content, and pick All or Shorts. The Top remixed report shows remix views and total remixes. To see the Shorts themselves, tap your Short's sound name in the app.

Does YouTube tell me when someone remixes my Short?

Yes. YouTube sends one summary notification a day when your videos are remixed, up to three times a week.

Can I turn off remixing on my YouTube Shorts?

Yes, for video remixing. In YouTube Studio, open Content, click the Short, press Show more, change Shorts remixing and press Save. Sound remixing stays on, unless you are a partner using Content Manager.

Can I remix any YouTube Short?

Most public Shorts, yes. Private videos cannot be remixed. A video with a copyright claim can be remixed only if its owner allows it, and a creator can turn off video remixing.

What types of YouTube remixes are there?

Five: Sound (up to 90 seconds of its sound), Green Screen (it plays behind you), Cut (1 to 5 seconds), Collab (side by side) and Reimagine (an 8 second AI clip).

Can I remix a long YouTube video into a Short?

Yes. Sound, Green Screen, Cut and Collab work on long videos as well as Shorts, and your Short links back to the full video. Reimagine works on Shorts only.

Can I remix YouTube Shorts on PC or iPad?

Yes on an iPad, in the YouTube app. YouTube's own steps start in the app on a phone or tablet, so use that rather than a computer.

Why is the YouTube remix button missing?

The video may be private, or claimed by an owner who has not allowed it in Shorts. Its creator may have turned off video remixing. Update the YouTube app, then look again.

    What is YouTube Reimagine?

A remix type YouTube announced in March 2026. Its AI turns one frame of a Short into a new 8 second clip. It works on Shorts only, and is reaching accounts in English first.

Does remixing help grow my YouTube channel?

It can. Each remix shows your video to the remixer's viewers, with a link back to your original so they can find your channel.

Can I remix a video that has a copyright claim?

Only if its owner made it available for Shorts, so look for the Remix button in the app. Some remixed Shorts that use music can also be blocked.

Can unlisted YouTube videos be remixed?

YouTube's help does not say either way. It only says private videos cannot be remixed. Open the unlisted video in the app and look for the Remix button.

Is this YouTube Shorts Remix Checker free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and it runs in your browser. It never connects to your YouTube account.

What is the difference between remixing and reposting a Short?

A remix uses part of a video inside your own Short, with a link back to the original. Reposting someone's whole video is copying it, and can get you copyright strikes.
